PROG LOG #7. Our Week In Prog
So where we we then? Oh yes, off on our merry way to the Golden Gods Awards to celebrate all things Metal and Hammery. Well the Ed and Jo Prog did. Russell went home to discuss Wishbone Ash with his 85-year old next door neighbor. One of the band’s younger fans apparently…
Anyway, as always the Awards were great fun down at the Indigo O2, and we ended up hanging out with the Mastodon guys who were great fun, especially drummer Brann Dailor, resplendent in his “2 Time Grammy Loser” t-shirt. And we also got to hang out with Bill Bailey who it appears was well happy with appearing in the pages of Prog. Between them, Bailey, who was presenting Mastodon with their Award for Best Album for The Hunter, and who himself was awarded the Spirit Of Metal award for his stupendous performance at last year’s Sonisphere (and for just being Bill Bailey) had concocted an hilarious acceptance skit that worked a treat and had everyone in stitches. A few more drinks were had down at the aftershow party at Foundation in Covent Garden, but by then it was getting a bit blurry sow e left the Hammer kids hard at it and went in search of sleep.
After that it was pretty quiet, having had to contend with Download the weekend prior to the Hammer Awards. There were a couple of gigs – Sarah Worsley went to catch the Jeff Green Project down in her native Southend (well, someone’s got to live there) whilst our Managing Editor Alex popped off to Koko to check out drone porggers Sunn0))). Some, in the past, have reported back on the bowel-loosening frequencies that the mysterious mob perform at. Now we’re not saying the two are connected, but Alex has since been moaning about a rumbling stomach.
And finally, our good friends at Roadrunner Records bade a farewell to their office and jobs at the end of the week, as Warners finally swallowed up the company. We’ve already waxed lyrical about the machinations so we won’t repeat that here. But we did get Prog caricature creator John Langton to come up with this lovely pic which we had framed and sent over to all the members of staff. Because we’re nice like that.
