Keith Emerson To Reveal Tracks Of His Years
Keith Emerson will appear on BBC Radio 2 all next week in presenter Ken Bruce’s Tracks Of My Years feature. Find links to each show via BBC iPlayer below.
The keyboard icon will choose some of his favourite songs and discuss what they mean to him.
Emerson says his selection will include work by Humphrey Lyttelton, Vanessa Carlton, Russ Conway, Herman’s Hermits, Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush CBE, Jeff Beck, Ron Goodwin, Joni Mitchell and Jimi Hendrix.
In an interview with Keyboard Magazine he revealed that if he had to form a band consisting of musicians he respected but had never performed with, he’d choose Rick Wakeman, Louis Armstrong, Spike Jones and PDQ Bach. He explained: “Apart from having wonderful sense of humour they’re all great musicians.”
And he recalled an early attempt to make contact with one of his first musical heroes, Georgie Fame. “I bought my first Hammond organ when I was about 15 or 16,” Emerson said.
“But it just didn’t sound like Georgie Fame, a singer and keyboardist who was then quite popular in London. The main music paper was the Melody Maker, and they had a question-and-answer section. So I wrote to them asking Georgie how he amplified and miked up his Hammond—and I actually got a reply, which I have in a scrapbook.
“I haven’t met Georgie Fame but I’ve thought of going up to him and saying, ‘Do you remember me? I wrote you in 1950-something!’ If I hadn’t gotten that reply, well, who knows?”
