I’m A Celebrity Goes Prog!
Last night the prog rock quota on mainstream telly doubled as Prog columnist and snooker champ Steve Davis entered the Aussie jungle alongside Channel Five presenter and Hawkwind uber-fan Matthew Wright for tolerence-baiting reality TV show I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here.
Despite revealing a fear of “heights, the dark, spiders, everything”, Davis soon found himself being flung out of a helicopter. Luckily he had the power of King Crimson behind him, and his Red team romped to victory on the first challenge, rewarded with a night on a luxury yacht while the Yellow team – featuring Mr Wright – bedded down on creepy-crawly island.
The next day it was a Red vs Yellow challenge featuring rats, scorpions and cockroaches. Steve (pictured below, with some of his record collection) is proving a viewer favourite with his calm head, ‘interesting’ ways and the dry wit we’re accustomed to at Prog. Matthew, however, seems to already have been awarded the honour ‘whipping boy’ after a bit of a freak-out with some snakes in a box. No biggie, though, as Matthew did win his challenge to get his team into the best camp, but was a weeping wreck throughout. And so they all retired for the night with both teams stuck in their respective camps during a violent hailstorm, snatching brief nocturnes and dreamless sleep. With the programme-makers pointing out that Matthew was, ahem, close to the edge, the British public have kindly put him forward for tonight’s Bushtucker Trial against Brain Of Brentwood Joey Essex.
Prog was first alerted to the fact that Davis may be a contestent on the endurance show after a) reading it in a national paper b) he asked us when the next three deadlines for his column were c) he also rung us to say he’d had a haircut. It was then we definitely knew something was up.
So long as he and Matthew – pictured below at this year’s Prog Awards with Lifetime Achievement hero Dave Brock – get a chat in now and again about The Enid, Gentle Giant or Magma, we’ll be happy, as over 12 million viewers have tuned in. That’s a whole lot of potential prog converts.
You’ll be able to vote for Team Steve and/or Team Matthew to keep them in the camp later this week.
I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here airs at 9pm each night on ITV.
