Hydra Head Records To Close
Hydra Head Records will issue its last release in December, founder Aaron Turner has revealed.
He says the respected experimental metal label has been struggling for some time, amid a combination of personal, financial and industry problems.
It has been home to acts including Cave In, Xasthur, Kayo Dot, Boris, Jesu, Botch, Khanate, and Harkonen.
Turner, who was guitarist and vocalist with LA post-metal band Isis, formed Hydra Head in 1993. He says that in the final reckoning he had no choice but to call a halt to the label’s operations.
He explains: “The simple fact of the matter is we’ve been running on empty for a while now. We cannot afford to keep our doors open much longer.
“Years of imbalance between creative ideals and financial realities, personal problems among the label operators, an unwillingness to compromise standards, a tendency towards releasing challenging – ie, unmarketable – artists, and the steady decking of the industry are among the chief reasons.
“It is a harsh buy undeniable reality, and one we are attempting to confront with as much integrity and grace as is afforded by the circumstances.”
Hydra Head will continue as a catalogue label, in the hope of recovering some of what Turner calls “rather sizeable” debts. To that end they’re planning a series of sell-offs including massively discounted bundle deals.
He adds: “We hope this closing will provide an opening into other even more positive and rewarding experience for all of us, and all of you who have been part of our shared experience.”
