Danny Thompson Celebrates Career With Connected
Danny Thompson has prepared an album showcasing some of his favourite recorded performances in a twelve-track album to be called Connections.
The multi-instumentalist and co-founder of Pentangle has worked with some of the biggest names in music over the years including Roy Orbison, Nick Drake, Ronnie Scott, Donovan and Kate Bush. But this record features some of the songs he feels most honoured to have been involved with.
It includes tracks with John Martyn, Barbara Dickson and Tom Robinson – plus a long-lost Bert Jansch recording.
Thompson says of the Pentangle song No Love Is Sorrow: “Bert was with me in Paris where I had an apartment and was working with French artists. The owner of the studio was an enormous fan of Bert and asked if he would ‘do something’ in his studio.
“I’d written a song that Bert chose to perform with a 30-piece orchestra, provided and paid for by the owner. The song has not been released before as I only just discovered the tape in my attic.”
Opening number Hatmosphere features the very first time he’s recorded a vocal track. Thompson explains: “Bobby Eichorn sent me an edited version of an introduction I had played at a concert and asked me if it would be okay to use it. I said only if he gave my my hat back that he’d nicked. He sent the hat as an ‘advance.’
“I recorded this improvised monologue in one take and sent it back to Bobby as a surprise. He was blown away and decided to use it. He did further editing, and here it is: my first vocal! I can’t even talk in tune.”
Describing the album, Thompson says: “This collection doesn’t feature me ‘flying about with me cuff-links caught in the strings,’ as on my jazz recordings. I was honoured to serve these wonderful people and their songs. I also wanted to do this before I snuff it…”
Connected is released at the end of September. All pre-orders placed before September 23 will be signed by Thompson and shipped the following day.
