The Prog Blog – Our Week In Prog
A pretty busy week all in, what with having to clear the latest issue by Wednesday afternoon – it’ll be on sale a week on Wednesday, July 10. However, no soon as we’d done that then we were on our way to the Houses Of Parliament for the Rock The House shindig at which TeamRock had hired a dining room to help celebrate MP Mike Weatherley’s music competition that helps recognise young and unsigned talent.
Prog columnist and be-caped grandee Rick Wakeman was there, giving a most eloquent speech. He later confessed to Prog that he’s actually quite nervous about the forthcoming Journey To The Centre Of The Earth dates for 2014 that we’d only just announced on the website the day before! Naturally we told him he has nothing whatsoever to be worried about. Later, as the alcohol flowed quite freely we spotted ex-Thin Lizzy guitarist Scott Gorham and chatted with young UK prog act Order Of Voices who had won the Best Video prize. There are hazy memories of sneaking into the House Of Commons and getting a guided tour of the roof of parliament which was great fun, until it was curtailed by some none-too-happy armed police. Oops!
With that behind us Sunday was quite a prog day in London, as well as featuring some of the nicest weather of the year. Dave Ling and Sarah Worsley were among the Prog scribes who turned up at the Barbican for what we are hearing was a stunning Van der Graaf Generator gig, whilst the Ed and Art Ed Rus headed to the Royal Albert Hall for Ian Anderson‘s Thick As A Brick show. Good to see additional vocalist Ryan O’Donnell reading a copy of Prog on stage in the second half of a great show. Prog had a good chat with Gavin Esler and Anna Phoebe at the aftershow, as well as with Steven Wilson and Dream Theater’s Jordan Rudess, while Russell made a bee-line for Marc Almond, who’d put in a sterling turn in both halves of the show earlier (he’s a massive Tull fan it appears). Alas Marc was the only person in the Artist Bar unaware of our Art Ed’s Wishbone Ash obsession. Let’s just say he’s not anymore!!
All that was left was to ensure we were all home and tucked up in bed ready for another week at the coal face this morning. We have a big announcement coming later this week – we’ll need to be on our toes!!
