The Prog Blog – Our Week In Prog
Those of you who read this blog will be aware that last Monday’s shenanigans with our new owners, TeamRock, knocked us a bit off kilter time wise, but here we are, up and running on the Monday as we should be this week.
Having said that, the Ed’s been up and running, or at least cycling, for the past six weeks and this week was no exception. We’ll now find out if all his hard work (well, he says he’s been working hard) has paid off, as the Heavy Metal Truants bike ride to Download for charity sets off from Alexandra Palace in London at 9.30am this Wednesday. Jerry will be checking in with us via the magazine Facebook page, and we’ll be happily monitoring his pain and anguish, er, his progress via the website as well. And no doubt photos of a broken man in a crumpled heap when he hook up with him at the Download site.
We found ourselves at the Cherry Red birthday bash on Thursday. The parent company of prog label Esoteric Antenna celebrated 35 years in the business with a shindig at Camden’s Dingwalls. Dr. Robert from The Blow Monkeys and the hugely enjoyable Go Kart Mozart were amongst the live entertainment and it was good to see Esoteric signings Matt Stevens, Oliver Wakeman and John and Frosty from Lifesigns getting stuck into the free beer.
And the next night we popped down to see Matt play support to both Sanguine Hum and Tin Spirits at a splendid show at London’s Borderline. Sanguine Hum aired material from their great new album Weight Of The World for the first time and it sounded great, whilst Tin Spirits aired some previews from their forthcoming album which sounded equally great. As for Matt – amazing as always. Cannot wait to hear his debut solo effort for the label. Steven Wilson popped down to check out the music, but even his presence was gazumped by that of Nellie of The Merch Desk who actually purchased a pizza from the venue and proceeded to eat it too!! To be honest, it looked like a brown paper parcel that’d been run over by a bus which someone dripped muddied, melted cheese over. Nellie swears it was, and we quote from Twitter, ‘Nomnomnom!!’.
Til next week then…
